New Music Friday Album Reviews [23rd August, 2019]

On this New Music Friday we take a brief look at a few new albums including some Hardcore from Knocked Loose, some strait classic metal from Sacred Reich, and some innovative yet ass kicking Helhorse! So, let’s get this party started!

Knocked Loose - A Different Shade Of Blue [Pure Noise]

When it comes to modern Hardcore, Kentucky’s Knocked Loose is usually one of the bands that come to mind. With chaotic riffs and an in your face attitude and sound, Knocked Loose has definitely proven themselves as being a great choice in nice, aggressive pissed off music and their new album A Different Shade Of Blue is no different. Where a lot of bands seem to get tamer with each release, Knocked Loose shows that they are just as pissed and ready to roll as they were when they formed in 2013. Listening to this album grabs that “breaking point” part of you. If you know that feeling like someone fucks with you to the point you want to just punch them in the face, then you will understand this album down to each driven riff, hard hitting beat, and painful scream. Even the cool down at the end of “…And I Still Wonder South” keeps you in that dark place. From start to finish this album is pure hardcore at it’s finest. I can only imagine how the pit at their shows on their tour is going to be like in support of this album with tracks like these being cranked out like gasoline onto a lit fire. Very highly recommended.

Sacred Reich - Awakening [Metal Blade]

Since 1985 Sacred Reich has made it through the highs and lows of the metal scene and have always persevered thanks to the bold and sociopolitical style of singer/bassist/songwriter Phil Rind. Today in 2019 the band releases their 10th album “Awakening” and they haven’t missed a step. With their current lineup they are still just as heavy and fast as they always have been 34 years ago without being over the top. Phil’s vocals sound so freaking good and fitting and the songwriting is timeless. The solos from guitarist Wiley Arnett are well placed and the riffs from newer member Joey Radziwill are thunderous and fast where necessary. The classic reprisal of drummer Dave McClain makes a nice addition and ties the whole thing together. This album is metal the way it’s supposed to be. The way it spawned in the 80’s. It’s almost like one of the metalhead subjects of Decline Of Western Civilization Part 2 went through a time warp and handed you this album. It’s not dated, it’s timeless. MASSIVE kudos to everyone involved in this masterpiece.

Helhorse - Hydra [Rodeostar]

For our third pick of the week, we go to Copenhagen, Denmark where we checked out the fourth studio effort from Helhorse called “Hydra”. In all honesty, this was my first helping of Helhorse and I almost feel ashamed for not listening to these guys from the start. From the moment this album starts it kicks your ass with a nice fuzzy sound with a classic rock tip. Much like High On Fire, this isn’t Sludge or Doom, but more like a Death Riders or Electric Hydra songwriting style that seems to be gaining popularity in the West. The riffs are fun, dark, the drumming is catchy, and the vocals fit perfectly. Hydra is a perfect storm of multiple rock influences while maintaining the element of evil that beats in the hearts of metalheads worldwide. I was not disappointed by this effort at all and plan to binge on their other albums over the weekend as I was left wanting more. A job well done and a new fan made in the process. If this is the mission of Helhorse with this effort, then they passed with flying colors. A job well done guys!
